At the rate things are going, a high-end PC powered by the Intel Core i7 CPU with 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB Serial ATA-II hard drive, 512 MB nVidia or ATI PCI-E graphics card with DVI-D output, and a nice 24" LG or Samsung 1920x1200 flat panel looks like a bargain in comparison. Given that Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate editions with SP1 is stable and reasonably fast on a Core i7 system, why would you bother with an overpriced iMac?

That's what I was expecting from an update for the high end iMac. What apple did now is downgraded the specs, for the same (or more, in the US) price:mad:

Some very silly things. 4-6 weeks for the 4850 upgrade? On the Mac Pros, the ability to connect multiple monitors is totally gimped. Mini Displayport is a pain in the arse with no obvious benefit.

I'll probably get a new Mac later this year, but Apple are making mistakes that they haven't made in a while. Little missteps that take away from their machines.

UK people should realize the pound is at historic lows, a 2 to 1 mindset versus the dollar doesn't reflect reality.

And people should check out benchmarks for the Nehalem Xeons - they are much faster than the old models, at the same clockspeed. And much more expensive, thanks to Intel.

How the ******* does $599 translate to £499? Even with VAT it doesn't come close. Oh well its time to move to a hackintosh.

Like this:

600 / 1.4 (the exchange rate) * 1.15 (VAT) = 492

add a few quid for the cost of transport and doing business in the UK...

If you dont like it, blame the government, the bankers, the economy. Not Apple

Speaking as a mac user from the UK may I just say:

Hooooooooooooooooooooooow much???

£500 for the Mac Mini? Are they taking the proverbial here? I know the pound is weak right now but my lord that's expensive. Yes, it's priced as it always is against the dollar but that's almost a months rent for the most basic computer Apple makes these days.

I wonder how well OS X runs on a Dell Mini 9....

Yeah! High end iMac... 1.8k gbp? ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS?

Speaking of mini... Alu Macbook with edu discount = 800 gbp; why ever bother with mini?

I really want an iMac... but I won't be dropping 1.8k... never ever!

WORST UPDATE EVER!!!!

So, now I have 2 options. A refurbished 24" 3.06Ghz (essentially the same as the "new" one), or a Hackintosh:mad:

Yes, completely correct. The old iMac was £782... and now the 'new' one is £949? And it has shared graphics - no dedicated graphics!

I'd say they were hoping most people opted for the entry 24" at £1119. It seems much better value than the 20" which seems to be on its way out now.

FOUR to SIX weeks to ship an iMac if it uses the optional ATI 4850 video card.

BOO!

I am new to the mac world so I dont know how their stores work..
will the US Apple stores have these today?

if there is any upside to this, there was a £500 mini before - it was the top end. Now, the new entry level is £500, but its still more powerful than the top end before - fast ram, more memory, way better graphics, faster processor (same clock but overall faster), wireless N, gigabit ethernet.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA @ the australian pricing. My brother was looking forward to getting a 20 inch one for his birthday. No ****ing way he will be now.
$2000 dollars for the entry level mac is so hilarious.
dhng

BTW the old price for the imac was $1599 even after pricing was bumped up with our dollar dropping! now $400 on top of that!!

How about when £1=$2. Didd you maths hold true then? Not at all mate - there was a huge markup.

It's a bit sad that once again, the product specs and attributes have been left behind as we all (UK) look at the price and complain. This has been the way for years past and will be years to come.

How does that compare to the ATI HD 2600 Pro? (I know very little about graphics cards)

iMacs had a slightly underclocked XT. They just referred to it as a Pro so nobody sued them saying it wasn't a full XT.

What the F***!!!! Apple ... are you guys taking the P***!!!

£1899 ($2,734) for a 3GHz dual core machine, or £1,200 for an entry level machine that doesn’t even offer the option of improving the graphics card.

This is surely Apples way of saying goodbye to the desktop market ... I honestly cannot believe the cheek of it! Words fail me ... I've been waiting for an update for nearly a year and this is what you give us?

Before you fanboys start moaning, lets just see what £1,799 buys me from Dell ... ready ...

XPS
Quad Core i7 2.93GHz 8mb Cache 1333MHz FSB
24" Display
8GB RAM
1.5TB Drive
512MB ATI Radeon 4850 (extra £40 option to add to the Apples £1,799!)
Blueray player
... with about £100 change.

Ok ok, we all love OSX ... but Im sorry, I'd rather take a poor handling Ferrari for a drive than a well balanced Hyundai!

Apple ... congratulations for alienating your entire desktop base and for giving your credibility as innovators a firm kick in the teeth!

I’m off to buy the Dell (minus £270 as I already have a 24") and for the massive saving AND substantial increase in spec, I'll live without OSX (until I can Hackintosh that is!)

And just like that my 3.06Ghz iMac with the 512MB 8800 is officially old hat.

Sigh.

Have you looked at the page? It is most definitely not old hat as the new version is still the same old Core 2 Duo that's in yours and nvidia hasn't made major advancements in their dedicated graphics cards since series 8.

my head hurts after i bumped my head on the floor after looking at the time capsule prices. how the hell does a 1TB HDD cost so much

well glad i bought a refurb MBA and my next computer desktop will have to be a cheap Dell with Hackintosh :(

Apple please re-think your prices - UK market is important to you,

Mac mini should have been lesser spec CPU and £249-500
iMac Should have been £699-1300
Mac Pro should have been £1200- 2000
Time Capsule should have been £149 (500GB) £219 (1TB)
Apple TV should be priced £179 (160gb) Atom CPU or there about

right wake me when this is all over

Looks like they offer and a new wired keyboard without a number pad...
