iMac - remote waking

I am in the process of getting a reliable VNC connection up and running between work and home. At either end, I have a Mac Mini (both running 10.4) and an Aluminium iMac (both running 10.5).

I guess that the ideal situation would be to run from iMac to iMac as they are the faster of the two machines either end and therefore able to process everything quicker. However up until now, things run slooowly across a 10Mb cable connection, but that's not what I'm here for...

I understand that the iMacs have a 'deep sleep' mode as a power saving concern. Is it possible to remotely wake it up over a WAN?

I've tried that - my iMac at home is in its snoring state and however hard I try, I can't get it to wake. Am using Chicken of the VNC and Jollys Fast VNC. I can't connect with CyberDuck either for FTP.
