Most times when I update my iPod, it just freezes iTunes. The iPod's screen goes from Syncing to just Connected, and I cant eject it. I usually have to hard reset it or just pull it out without ejecting. After i do either of those it will reset itself, and sometimes it will come back saying it has no music, but the HDD space is still taken.
I've tried different versions of iTunes, and to update the firmware on my iPod.
This has happened on OSX XP and Vista.
Is it a hardware issue?

Has it always done this?

You could try a hard reset and reformat? As well as a reinstall of the latest version of iTunes on your PC.
