Picking your nose and eating it is one of the best ways to stay healthy, according to a top Austrian doctor.

Innsbruck-based lung specialist Prof Dr Friedrich Bischinger said people who pick their noses with their fingers were healthy, happier and probably better in tune with their bodies.

Heh. I've been doing it for years. Never could get ALL of that snot out of the nose with a Kleenex... :D

Only do it in private, though. And I wash my hands when I'm done.

i've heard before that it's a good idea to get your nose clean by any means necessary, because the buildup can clog your sinuses and lead to sinus polyps... which sounds rather more disgusting than picking one's nose. eating it makes you healthier? well doc if you say so...

Well the most important thing is to do it in private, others would not understand its health benefit. It's good to know that it benefits the immune system. By all means washing your hands is important. :)

I should not have read this thread while eating an evening bowl of oatmeal. It's going to be hard finishing it now...

I'm sorry, hopefully you will be able to finish your oatmeal. It sounds as though your not meant to be in the medical profession.

Well, my wife's an RN, so I'm used to hearing about many things while eating. It was just that the oatmeal was so similar in appearance....

I finished it, though, of course. Yum! :)

OK, that was just too hilarious. ;)

I disagree though, what's in your nose, is obviously what your body doesn't need. Just like urine...and yeah.
It's expelled out because the body has no use for it.

When something gets in your eye, the tears wash it into the nose canal, resulting in 'snot'. I ain't about to pick out bits of rock and dust from my nose and eat it anytime soon....and I doubt it'll do wonders for the immune system. Although there was this one kid back in primary school who used to eat his chips after dropping em on the ground screeching "It'll increase the antibodies in my immune system!"

Anybody remember this?
"[insert name] picks his nose, dips it in the dirt and eats it for dessert!"
Kids who got caught picking their nose would be teased endlessly.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. :)

That's pretty funny. For some reason I kept thinking of the mad scientist in The Man With Two Brains or something (not Steve Martin, the other guy...)

Brings up an interesting point, though, about society condemning bodily functions in general as taboo... not that it's going to stop (I guess that's what the whole "apple of knowledge" thing was about). But it definitely goes too far (just ask Janet Jackson). I mean, why should I get odd looks when I "re-adjust" my boxers? ;) I guess we can blame religion, mostly, probably... (cf. Family Guy episode with children's book "Everybody Poops" replaced for Catholics by "You're a Naughty, Naughty Boy and That Is Concentrated Evil Coming Out of You") -- not that I have anything against Catholics, my g/f is one!

In my head
In Nepal the art of nose picking seemed to be a perfected art. The desert is a good place to get a nose full of boogies too, but a bit too gritty to eat I think. And nose picking in coalmines must be rife, and practical. Miners finger tips must be a bit easier to wash than their handkies.

It makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

Most of the stuff in the mucus has gone 3 rounds with the immune system and lost. The results are weakened and killed bacteria and virii. Its like an oral polio vaccine except its more broad-spectrum and more focused to what you are actually fighting.

It reminds me of a story about some women who were allergic to semen and a recommendation that they could increase their chances of conceiving by getting orally vaccinated as it were. This was backed by studies and some "old wives tales" (I met a woman who had it suggested to her by her mother!)

But couldn't it also get you sick?

I mean enough of whatever you have up there... or am I wrong?

Depends...where have you been, and what are you inhaling? :p

Though, for the sake of all the oatmeal-eaters of the world, I think pursuing greater immunity through nosepicking should definitely be a private thing.
