iBook G4 originally running Mac OS X 10.3.5 which had long since been upgraded to 10.4 Tiger

My computer will not boot up. Depending on how I try to boot up I either get a blank gray screen, the question mark alternating with the mac face logo, or the apple with the spinner (which doesn't load).

I have tried to reset PRAM and NVRAM using cmd>opt>P>R. After several chimes (3 or 4) I let the keys go. It boots to a blank gray screen.

I have tried booting in Open Firmware Mode using cmd>opt>O>F. I then type in "reset-nvram" followed by "reset-all." It automatically restarts and I get the apple with the spinner which never actually loads.

I tried booting in Single User Mode via cmd>S. This goes to the "?" that alternates with the blue mac face logo.

I've tried booting from the Mac Os X Install Disc by holding C. When it does anything at all (infrequently), I select my language preference. It then loads the packages and immediately freezes.

I tried booting in safe mode by holding down shift during boot up. I got the following Kernel Panic.

Panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: “PowerBook6,5”.

Panic: We are hanging here…

Out of curiosity, I also tried targeting the disk via firewire from a MacBook Pro. It eventually recognized it but gave me an odd error message which I didn't write down. I think it said something about device removal. I tried repairing the disks (there were two, aside from the ones belonging to the MacBook Pro)using Disk Utility. One was about 3.2 GB and the other like 50 or 60 GB. I let it "work" for about an hour. When I stopped it, there had been no progress as displayed by the progress bar.

As I see it, I've got a way cool paper weight. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Is the Tiger Install DVD a retail version or the one that came with the MacBook Pro?

I suggest getting a new 2.5" IDE drive for your iBook and replacing it.
Guides are at ifixit.com.

It could also mean a Logic Board failure, I had this happen to me after the infamous 18 months of my iBook G4's life. Only a Logic Board replacement solved the problem.

You could contact Apple, if there is still an open program replacing certain Logic Board models.

Yep, sounds like your hard drive has gone south.

If you intend to replace it yourself, you have my sincerest sympathy. A hard drive replacement on a G4 iBook is a rather large pain in the rear.

May the Force be with you.

Hey spinnerlys,

Thank's for the tips. It is the retail Tiger DVD. I was actually attempting to boot from the iBook G4 Mac Os X Install DVD Disc Version 1.0 (2Z691-5150-A).

New Symptom. I tried to boot in in Target Disk Mode again (which it had no problem with 3 days ago). When I boot it up and hold "T" it makes this loud screeching "dying baby" noise until I turn it off. But if I just try powering it up the symptom is absent. What about Target Disk Mode could trigger this? I don't have a clue.

Thanks!

Jon.
