I picked up a 2.8GHz today and the screen is a 9CA3 also. It is a different display than before. A larger gamut doesn't necessarily show brighter colors, but allows a broader range of colors. I can't really tell yet but I will do a color calibration tonight and from that data I should be able to tell if it looks like a better gamut.

Yes, I think it's a claimed 7 hours as opposed to a claimed 5.

Apple may be sympathetic if you have a polite word with them. It's a bit tough losing out by just two weeks. I've definitely heard of them accommodating people in your position.

Failing that, are you sure that you can't return it, perhaps subject to a 10% re-stocking fee?

You were right! I just got off the phone with a real nice guy.
It took a few minutes before he approved my return request (could be standard procedure) and he also mentioned about the 10% restocking fee, but when I asked, "hmm... how much would that be?" he said, "well, okay, never mind!" (could also be standard procedure)
So now I am going to order another custom configured 15" and compared the two before I return the current 15". Maybe I was lucky because he was very exhausted (40+ hours since Monday, he said he had never been so busy, in fact it took 20+ mins to reach him) and it is also his 21st birthday and he is going to Vegas. Lucky him :D

15 inch was updated with increased color gamut. I'm 99% sure I heard that from Schiller during the keynote.

After calibrating I'm inclined to believe the better gamut. The standard and maximum deviation read by the calibration software after it runs on the 9ca3 display is less than the 9c85 and 9c84 displays. I have not spent enough time with it yet for a subjective opinion but I do think it looks a little better. Not as dramatic as increase in display quality on the 13" but definitely nicer.

The colors have more pop on the 15" mbp. It's an upgrade, but I agree, nowhere near as dramatic as on the 13" mbp jr.

It's not too late to return it.

In your position I would get the latest model for all the benefits that it has. :)

I know, but it's not as simple as carrying back to Apple Store. This MBP was bought for me by my employer (they buy them from business contractors) so first of all it would be a pain in the ass to return it: I would miss working days (that's just siplmy not possible) and I have this one all set up (I needed the machine right away).

So in all, I shouldn't be complaining at all (and that wasn't my point, there is always that "what if" going around in my head, I guess that's the way I am :) my apologies if I was missleading, that wasn't my intention), and they also got me a 24" Cinema display which got here yesterday, so problem solved. I use it with 80%+ of the time with external display anyways so I'm not that worried about the small screen update anyways anymore.

I need the express card anyways, so this one is a keeper. I wish they solve the 8GB upgrade by some firmware update later.

Still thanks everyone for the replies.

Color profiles for 9CA3 screen

Here are two profiles I made for the 15" 9CA3 screen with an Eye2 color calibrator and Coloreyes Display Pro software. They both have gamma of 2.2 and one uses the native white point and the other D65 white point. Most people will want to use the native white point one.

Really good news! Enjoy the new(er) one. :)

The fuss is that before, it was possible to use all sorts of adapters in the ExpressCard slot. A multi-card reader can be found for less than $20 for ExpressCard 34, whereas now users are stuck with just an SD card reader. When the prices come down on flash memory, I might buy myself an ExpressCard SSD or perhaps a multi-card reader for my digital camera, which can't be neatly tucked inside the laptop with the new models.

Ah, got it now. Thanks Bill! :)

I'd still rather have the latest model!

What good is having the 'latest model' if it has a feature I'll never use ( SD Card Slot ) and missing one that I will use. ( Express Card Slot )

Thankfully I bought mine a few weeks ago and I can use every feature it has built in.

I plan on keeping this notebook long after Apple Care expires, the User Replaceable battery is another plus. If I need more away time, I can always carry another battery.

I guess I am just not one of those " if it's not the latest, then it's not the greatest " people! ;)

Just because it is the latest model, doesn't mean it is the greatest! ;)

I agree with you. I'm not that kind of person who always needs to have the latest gadget. If I were you, I wouldn't have tried to exchange it. But after careful consideration, I have decided that I will never use the ExpressCard slot. As for the replaceable battery, I will probably never go to places where there's no electric outlet, for more than 24 hours. Last but not least, it is a lot cheaper! As a college student, I want to save as much as I can :) On top of that, I'm going to take advantage of promotion this time and use that money to buy the new iPhone. (I currently do not own iPhone.)

I totally agree, but this update has many features that are superior to the previous model IMHO.

It will also hold it's value better on the second-hand market.

Considering how many people are saying they prefer a notebook with an Express Card slot over one with an SD Card slot, saying one without will hold its value better over one with is a bit of a stretch.

Exactly what updates are superior that will make it hold value in the used market???

Was there a new high speed CPU? No, there were incremental increases.

A battery you cannot easily replace???

As far as I can tell there were no 'earth shattering' updates. If anything this latest version may in fact help hold up the value of the previous version.

I don't know, maybe I am too busy looking at how useful the notebook is to me, and can the next one be more useful.

On top of that, I'm going to take advantage of promotion this time and use that money to buy the new iPhone. (I currently do not own iPhone.)

I was going to buy my daughter the Aluminum Macbook for college.

Now it looks like she'll be getting the Macbook Pro 13" - for her the differences will not be noticeable. We took will take advantage of the promotion. Buy the iPod Touch. Get the rebate money back, and sell the iPod Touch to offset the overall cost of the notebook.

Of course the rebate is "up to $229" for iPod touch so that limits the purchase to 8GB model. Probably won't get much selling that one ...eh? ;)

Does the promotion cover the iPhone? I thought it was only for iPods.

Thanks for sharing this!
It works greatly on my 9CA3 screen.
Cheers!

Hm... I'm looking into countries where mrp is high relative to the U.S. mkt (Japan comes to mind. The price of 8GB is ¥27,800 + tax, and today's exchange rate is Yen per USD 98.2028872)

No, it doesn't. What I meant was that I would sell the iPod to cover the cost of the new iPhone ;)

Err, faster processor, double the standard RAM, significantly upgraded battery, and better screen, to name just a few that spring to mind!

This is comparing the previous and present 15 inch base models. For me these are attractive and superior features that add value, and I say that as someone who bought 2 of the previous model (one for each of my student sons) in January this year. The ones I bought are superb laptops but the newer model is clearly superior regardless of the SD card slot, and not just because it's newer.

As regards the second-hand value, I'd be amazed if anyone would pay more for the older model. Just my honest opinion. :)

I agree that you should get the model that has what you want. However in my case the longer battery life from a single battery, the SD slot, and the slightly improved screen are very useful to me (and the slightly faster processor is nice too). The 17" model still has the express card slot but not the removable battery.

Do the "first gen" unibody MacBook Pro's (pre June 2009 refresh) models support 8GB as well? I remember reading somewhere that the limit was 6GB on those.

i believe you are right. the first gen uni mbp has max ram of 6gb. the early 2009 has a max of 8gb, just like the lastest version.

Sorry im new to Macs, how do i install this?

Thank you very much for the profiles. Would you mind making a 1.8 gamma version of this profile? I've tried to modify the file directly, but it doesn't seem to work...

The default color profile for the new MBP 15" is so bright and vivid that it's hard to use. I for one don't like the new screens compared to the last gen uni MBP 15"...

It's still only a TN panel, it isn't truly capable of millions of colors (just like 20-inch iMacs), and it's glossy, so it can't be *that* improved  ...

Thanks so much for this. The contrast is much better and the colors aren't as washed-out using your "native" profile.
