Hi, I plan to backup my current 2.2.1 iPhone 3G, reset it, pass it down to another person. Then get the 3Gs.

Will it be easy to do this? I don't mind reloading the media (music, videos), but would it be easy to restore the apps? I have about 50 so far and can't weed through them again. The contacts, settings, datebook, pictures, etc is what's important.

I too wonder the same thing about my first gen 4GB iPhone. Will I be able to save any of my SMS Text Messages?

Yes, iTunes will back up your apps, contacts, settings, calendar, pictures, etc. that are on your current iPhone and will restore them to your new iPhone when you first sync it. However, I am not sure if it backs up and restores SMS text messages.

Since the 3Gs has 3.0 software, will it be easy to restore my previous settings? I just deleted an old backup in itunes and "back"'ed up again before passing it down.

1. Plug old iPhone into iTunes and wait for it to finish syncing.
2. Plug new iPhone into iTunes and restore from backup.

Everything will be there.

You will get to keep your SMS messages as long as your restore from backup after setting up your new phone.

Though from what I've heard 3.0 doesn't run as smoothly if it isn't set up as a new phone...

Does it matter if the old iPhone is using 2.2.1 firmware instead of 3.0? Kind of a n00b at iTunes, and it's not the most user friendly app. Anyway to just pick which areas you want to restore from iTunes?

Maybe does not make any difference but I would upgrade my old phone to 3.0 on the 17th and then simply do a final Sync on the 19th or whenever you get your new phone.
