Terrible Analogy.

One button I'd like for example would be a power button to turn the screen on and off.

FWIW, You could assign a "Hot Corner" to sleep the display while the computer is on. Not as tactile as a button, of course, but it works.

Wow, that's a great price. So what can one expect from a refurb unit? Are these usually mint condition? Should I expect any scratches or dead pixels?

Yeah I have wondered if they come with dead pixels as well? Cuz we all know that some people buy them brand new and if it comes with a few dead pixels they return them and get new ones. I wonder if Apple fixes or replaces the screen (I doubt) before they sell them refurb.

I wouldn't be surprised if some returned because they found out they didn't have mini displayport.

I've never had much luck with refurbs - I guess just bad luck. But, the great thing about them is everyone is inspected and tested prior to shipping.

Yup, mine came in yesterday. Beautiful display! Absolutely no reason this could not pass for brand new. This was a killer deal; I was surprised to see such a great deal directly from Apple.

My Mac Pro is currently elevated 4" off the ground on wooden blocks as my MinyDisplayPort Extension from Monoprice has not yet arrived!

I wouldn't be surprised if some returned because they found out they didn't have mini displayport.

This is my theory as well. Also, some of the first users experienced a "color-shift" issue when connected to a MacBook Pro - this turned out to be a video card issue (which i think has been resolved), not the display itself.

ahhh we just bought one of these... and didn't realize it can't be used with the older blackbooks :( is there not a solution to this?! we had no idea that they didn't work with the older macbooks... :(

There is currently no way to convert DVI signal to MiniDisplayPort (although the reverse can be done) so no, there is not a way for this to be used with your BlackBook! Sorry!

Sorry, but you could sell it to me!

sorry to hear about that, you should have no problem returning or selling it. You can always get one of the new shiny 13" MBPs to use it with.

but this proved my point earlier. :)

Mine just arrived, it's pretty much perfect except this:

Maybe I'll try to exchange it?

I think you can return it for a short period of time for any reason. After that, there is some number of dead pixels (around 7) that you can still return it for. If it was me, I'd probably return it.

Yeah, I called Apple, setup appointment to bring it to the Genius Bar. If they can't repair/replace it I think I can just return it and order another one. The guy on the phone was very polite and helpful.

Even for refurbs? That is a good policy.

do not buy refurbished ACD

Ok, an update, the genius looked at the ACD, it didn't have enough bad pixels to be repaired, so they helped me return it without restocking fee or shipping, and I was offered $100 off a new one over the phone. Being cheap for no real good reasons, I asked if I could use the $100 to get another refurbed one ($500 for LED ACD is crazy cheap right? right?), I figured a new new one and a different refurbed one will be subjected to the same bad pixel count policy anyway, and the chance of getting 2 bad refurbed ACDs in a row is pretty low.

Well, the 2nd refurbed got here, they overnighted it to me free of charge btw, and there was a huge piece of dust between the LCD and the (LED) backlight, so I am returning the 2nd refurbed one also. I was offered a $100 promotional coupon (minimum $300 order though) to use at apple.com. I didn't feel like waiting at home for FedEx again, so I just went and picked one up at an Apple Store. This new (non-refurbed) is my 3rd ACD in a week, it is nearly perfect, there is a very small piece of dust but it is very hard to see or find. So I'm pretty happy with it.

So, lesson learned, do not buy refurbished ACDs. The manufacturing process on these things are just very difficult to get perfect, the glass is attached with magnets and it is not air-tight, so dusts could get in during shipment (or when sitting on your desk). I spent probably 4 hours total on the phone with Apple yesterday and today, time wasted would've more than paid for the price difference.

Here's a picture of how the 2nd refurbed ACD looks like:

How difficult is it to take it apart and clean it? Any special tool required?

To remove the glass, you need some suction cup, it is held by magnets, however, a clean room is pretty much required or you will get more dusts in there than you originally have.

The dust in the 2nd ACD was behind the panel itself, so it will require removing the glass, and then removing the panel, I believe the panel is held by screws on the side like most other display assembly. And after that I should be able to get to that piece of dust. That is assuming it is actually a piece of dust. It could be messed up backlight plane or whatever.

I think it is safe to say if you've ever returned a NON refurbished item for a cosmetic or 'non-DOA' situation, you probably shouldn't buy Refurb items, because you are probably as picky as I am.

I don't really think a sample size of two is sufficient to make that judgement.

BTW the refurb 24" LED ACD I received has no dust or stuck pixels :)

Yeah, true, I typed that half jokingly. I know I was pretty unlucky to get 2 bad ones in a row. It's just that in hindsight it didn't make sense for me to take that chance by not getting new coz the time wasted dealing with the repair/return/exchange was just not worth it for me.

A great price, but not such a good experience for me so far

I got mine for the $699 CDN - a smokin' deal! It came with no dead pixels, no backlight issues, no dust! I was so happy!

But when I turned it on for the first time it was making a weird crackling sound. I checked it out on the net, they said it was the heat of the monitor expanding metals. For the price I laid out, it didn't seem right, so I took it in for repair.

They replaced the repair unit, but after that it started flickering and showing snow. So then they ordered a new 'logic' board for it to see if that fixed the issue. Didn't fix it. They are now replacing the LED. So now I have a refurbished refurbished machine. So much for the stringent QC process that refurbs have to go through!

So far I have owned the machine for 3 weeks, and I have had it for a total of a few hours! I'm pretty disappointed as I needed it for work! I've talked with Apple - they said that I will get a new unit if this 3rd repair doesn't work.

I'm telling you - one stuck pixel, one piece of dust, one bit of bleeding - I'll ask for my money back! It's not like I'll miss having the monitor around!!
