Why is the GPRS icon still there?

Having turn off all data transmission i know(wifi, 3G, EDGE and GPRS), i still get the tiny o beside the singtel logo at the status bar. I turned off the GPRS by renaming the APN to Disabled and turning off EDGE with SBSetting. Still i see this o. it must be trying to transmit data but cannot becoz my apn is wrong.

how do i stop it from trying to connect? i dont want the o icon there even though my data usage is 0kb. i feel it is eating my battery life.

airplane mode really save a lot of juice. but i want to do calling and do sms. i just want the gprs and other data connectivity to be off. but the gprs icon is always there! does it have to do with service provided and sim card?
