Hello all, making my first post here at macrumors.com!

Anyways, I have a first gen iPod touch, and I have recently discovered the possibilities with the fring app. I was just about to buy earphones with a mic, when I realized that the mic support is only for the 2nd gen iPod touch. Are there any mics that will work with the 1st gen iPod touch, or will Apple release an update that covers the 1st gen users?

Thanks!

The type of mics that are designed to work in the 2nd generation iPod Touch cannot, and never will, work in the 1st generation version. That's because the newer version has a critical extra wire connected to its headphone jack which was not included in the design of the original iPod Touch. It's that extra wire that makes sound input through the headphone jack possible.

It is physically possible to input sound through a Line In channel included in the Dock Connector of both the 1st and the 2nd generation iPod Touch. In theory it would be possible to wire up an accessory that plugs in to the Dock Connector and provides a microphone for the 1st generation iPod Touch that way. However, the iPhone/iPod Touch SDK doesn't appear to permit access to that hardware, so Fring wouldn't be able to use it.

I'm curious as well....I installed a Fring into my 1st-gen touch and it works, minus the ability to talk.

Are there available add-on mics for the 1st-gen ipod touch?

There is a solution - Mic for 1st Gen iPod Touch

By using a mic on the dock connector and the latest iPod Touch update you can record and phone with the 1st Generation.

I have not tried this yet. Here is a posting from just a few weeks ago on an Italian Mac site (in English)

http://www.macitynet.it/english/aA3...p_and_recording_with_1st_gen_ipod_touch.shtml

They suggest using the Macally iVoice Pro
http://www.macally.com/EN/Product/ArticleShow.asp?ArticleID=235

But Macally does not list the 1st Generation Touch as compatible.

Anyone have any experience with this the iVoice and iTouch 3.x software? What I've read makes me believe the mic portion doesn't work. Odd the software update would remove functionality unless it was intensional.

Mic works on 1st generation itouch

I have updated the firmware on my itouch 1st gen. I have a bluey mic that plugs into it and that works. I know this because it is possible to use Shazam with it and it hears and recognises songs. I haven't yet managed to record anything yet though as the apps probably all need updating to make use of this new function on the 1st gens.

Apple can alter the way the device uses its connectors as they stopped it from working through an s video cable. I used to plug mine into the TV with one and watch itunes movies. They changed this with a firmware update so you now need their £50 cable.

Hope my first post is helpful

cheers

Macally Does Work but Firmware must be pre 3.1

I am using Macally iVoiceIII, and Skype and iTalk both work but not above firmware 3.0 on 1st Gen. I upgraded to 3.1.2 and had to rollback to 3.0 get the mic to work again. I can't however get the mic to work with Shazam or Midori Soundhound.

I have recently discovered the iCall app and installed it on my 1st generation iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3, the only problem is I can't find a microphone that works with this iOS. I know that others have used iCall on this model of iPod Touch to make free phone calls through a dock connector microphone. But I understand that now this microphone is no longer made, nor would it work with iOS 3.1.3 if I could find one.

I really would like to be able to make free calls on my old iPod Touch and thus extend its usefulness. Any suggestions?
