I was going to buy an ipad, but having just realized how poor the wallpaper picture is, I'm afraid I'll have to get an HP slate instead. THEY know good wallpaper!!!

Pyramid Lake (at Night)

Am I the only one who doesn't like the iPad wallpaper shown on the Apple site and promo images. I know it was commissioned by Apple and cost them some $$ supposedly, but I think it is somewhat lame..

I personally think they could have done better.

It was taken by Richard Misrach, and called "Pyramid Lake (at Night)"

Since you love his work so much, here is a link to more of his work:

Personally I think I prefer this one of his photos as a iPad wallpaper

The default wallpaper is meant to say something. It is a shot of dawn. In other words it is pointing to the dawn of a new age of computing. They didn't commission someone to make a nice wallpaper, they commissioned someone to convey a message via a wallpaper.

Personally I find it pretty boring as a wallpaper, not being a big nature fan, and will promptly replace it. I do however, understand their choice from a marketing perspective.

iPad Wallpaper

I'm surprised there isn't a thread about the iPad wallpaper. Has anyone started making any specifically for the iPad? If not, this could be a good way to help pass the time

From certain experiences, iPad wallpaper is best sized at 1024x1024 (because of rotation).

Here is a wallpaper I have in my collection that I converted to iPad size. If this thread takes off, I'll make more.

Shouldn't the images be 1024x768, not 1024x1024?

No, the 1024x1024 resolution will allow the image to remain intact without any black bars on the side for when the device is turned into landscape

Edit: By the way here are a few pictures that I'm gonna use on my iPad when it gets here on Saturday, all of which are from interfacelift.com:

The home screen rotates? It doesn't rotate on the iPhone. Maybe I missed that little tidbit about the iPad.

And I should have said 768x1024, not the other way around.

In landscape it's 1024x728. But when you rotate it to portrait it changes to 768x1024, and doesn't rotate the wallpaper. Just changes the screen size.

Has that been verified that the wall paper doesn't rotate when you rotate the screen?

I don't remember noticing it during Steve's persentation or any of the videos of the ipad, but I could have missed it.

Here is a red one, and I think this gray wood one will look awesome behind the icons.

I seem to recall seeing in the iPad Guided Tours videos a shot of the home screen in landscape (in the iWork videos, I think), in which the wallpaper was rotated (it's easy to tell with the wallpaper they use). It showed a wider angle of the same shot, so I'd assume that Apple used a 1024x1024 image, which is cropped depending on the orientation.
