My iPad locked-up while playing Angry Birds, and I had to press the home button and the power button together in order to restart it. After doing that, the iPad will not boot past the screen with the Apple logo.

I googled around and found out that by pressing the home button while connecting it to my Mac with the USB-cable, I could put it into recovery mode. And it worked. I got the dialog box in iTunes telling me that it found an iPad volume that needed to be restored. iTunes downloaded the iPad software and prepared to restore when I got error message with code 14.

I looked up that error message in a support document:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

And it seems to be something regarding the USB-connection.
I have tried to restore it on three different Macs: two MacBook Pro's and on a Mac Pro.

And I also tried this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747

But I still get that error message 14.

What can I try now to get it working again? Might there be some issue with the iPad hardware? Is my iPad bricked?

Cheers,

Ray.

I've now also tried to recover on a Windows PC, but no luck there either. On the PC I get both error message 13 and 14. :/

DFU Mode is your friend. It's different than restore mode and should have you good to go.

Plug the iPad in, hold home and power buttons for 10 seconds, until the iPad screen goes black.

After you've done that, release the power button but keep holding the home button.

You should hear a beep letting you know you're iPad is plugged in. Click restore in iTunes...you should be good to go!

I thought I was going to have the same issue earlier. I was in the middle of a game and it turned off completely. I turned it back on, wouldn't boot past Apple, did the reset with home and power buttons but it just did the same, wouldn't boot past the Apple. Finally I thought I'd best leave it for a few mins and see and after 2 or 3 anxious minutes it came to life and has been fine.

Argo: Thanks for the tip :) I've tried it and itunes still says that "the iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)" :/

sorry to hear you're still having trouble matey.

Try this...create a new user account on your mac, make sure iTunes is up to date, and try again on your new account. The restore file should download again, and hopefully your iPad will restore.

I know you've tried on other PC's, but aside from keep trying, i'm all out of ideas. Hope you get it sorted ;)

Try a different sync cable, I got this error with two mono price cables; switched to the one that came with my iPad and all was well.

emkwan: The iPad is not jailbroken.

I think I've tried everything now, apart from calling Apple.
And I had a look in Console.app as I got the error message in iTunes:

Anyone know how to read this? (I liked that Star Wars reference in there by the way, hehe.)

I just talked to Apple Support in Norway. And I since the iPad is not yet released here, I have to either send it to a service center in the states. Or wait until friday, when the iPad is release in certain european countries and contact Apple in one of those countries. So I'll try and call Apple in England next week i think.
