About ship dates

I got notification that my copy of Motion shipped AFTER it arrived at my door, so there you have it.

I'll summarize the terms of Apple's agreement with IBM since the original is too long to post here:

- Apple is required to supply IBM with _rolling_ product demand forecasts it needs by the end of the month for the following month. (Apple can adjust the forecasts up to the 10th of the following month.)

- Apple places Purchace orders priced on the already agreed upon _unit_ price. (So yields affect IBM price wise)

- If IBM is not confident in the accuracy of the rolling forecasts, it must escalate the matter to both IBM and Apple upper Executive management to resolve.

- IF IBM cannot fulfill a PO in the time Apple specified within the agreed upon time periods, IBM must escalate the matter to Apple and IBM upper Executive Management to resolve.

- Verbatim on Delivery:
------------
4.3 If IBM or its Plant foresees any supply constraint with respect to an accepted Purchase Order, IBM will provide prompt notice to Apple and, if the Purchase Order was placed by someone other than Apple, to the Authorized Purchaser or Designee who placed the Purchase Order. Apple and IBM will then discuss likely shipment recovery plans, and if they are unable to do so to Apple’s satisfaction, the parties will immediately escalate the issue to the IBM and Apple executives designated for such purpose pursuant to Section 21.2 and the parties will use reasonable efforts to promptly resolve the discrepancy. If IBM’s supply of the Product and / or Services ordered by Authorized Purchasers or Designees and accepted by IBM hereunder becomes constrained [**] IBM may reduce the quantities of Products and / or Services to be supplied to Authorized Purchasers or Designees.

4.4 If IBM or its Plant foresees any delivery delay with respect to an accepted Purchase Order, IBM will provide prompt notice to Apple and, if the Purchase Order was placed by someone other than Apple, to the Authorized Purchaser or Designee who placed the Purchase Order. Apple and IBM will then discuss likely shipment recovery plans, and if they are unable to do so to Apple’s satisfaction, the parties will immediately escalate the issue to the IBM and Apple executives designated for such purpose pursuant to Section 21.2 and the parties will use reasonable efforts to promptly resolve the delay.
---------

- Verbatim on Costs of processor
(the ** were stricken out due to confidentiality agreement, but basically IBM is eating the yield problem costs.) :
----------
6.5 [**] Costs. IBM will be solely responsible for all [**] incurred in connection with [**] of the microprocessor Products set forth on Exhibit 4, and under no circumstances will Apple be liable to IBM for any such costs (except to the extent such costs were included in the agreed purchase price of a Product and Apple is liable for that purchase price pursuant to this Agreement without reference to this Section 6.5).
--------

Other important points from the contract, IBM can resell "standard" PowerPC processors to others but cannot resell to others "Custom" processors and ASICs designed by Apple using IBM technology. (ie, if Apple designs their own SOC 970FX with other integrated components, IBM could not resell Apple's specific designs to others.)

- Regarding FREQUENT FAILURES:
-----------
14.2 IBM will promptly notify Apple if IBM believes that a Product contains a defect that could result in Failed Units exceeding the Failure Threshold. IBM may stop shipments of all such Products [**] while IBM and Apple analyze the defect and discuss whether shipments should resume. If the Product contains such a defect, IBM will use diligent efforts to promptly: (i) cure such defect and resume shipments as quickly as possible; or (ii) make available a replacement Product that meets the agreed specifications for the Product but does not contain such a defect. [**] The modified or replacement Products shall be fully warranted as set forth in Sections 13 and this Section 14 once qualified by Apple. If Apple provides IBM written instructions acknowledging IBM’s notice of a defect but instructing IBM to resume shipments in advance of a cure or replacement, IBM will resume such shipments as quickly as possible; provided, however that: (a) Apple’s instructions will not relieve IBM of its obligation to cure the defect or make a replacement part available as set forth above; and (b) uncured Products shipped pursuant to such written instructions will be shipped without warranty, express or implied, or Frequent Failure protection with regard to such defect or any related defect rendered undetectable due to the presence of such defect.
--------------

As far as compensation to Apple for failed components: (a)If Apple agrees, IBM can give it a replacement or refund Apple the full price it paid. Or, (b) [**Confidential]

Beyond that, the contract covers processors and ASICs that IBM will be delivering for their Pro, Consumer, Server, pro Portable, consumer-portable including the U3 and the upcoming "U3 Lite".

(A lot of the important stuff was asterisked out but I was able to post what is now in the public domain.)

2.0 vs 2.5

I was going to get the 2.5 but fry's had the Dual 2.0 G5 | 512 MB RAM | ATI 9600 Pro | 160 GIG HDD | 4x Super Drive for $2099 so I got that instead. I went from a 1.33 GHz 17in PB to the Dual G5 and it’s a very noticeable difference. I can play UT 2004 max setting at 1600 x 1200 no problems. Rendering is also so much faster.

My Question is for those who received there 2.5's are it a big difference in performance compared to the Dual 2.0?

Do you guys think I made a wise choice with the Dual 2.0 considering the price I paid for it?

You saved about $900 and are happy with the performance of your G5, so I think you made a wise choice. The 2.5's are about 15% to 20% faster than the 2.0's, and that's not even noticeable for many users (unless you are really taxing the machine a lot). Plus, you can still upgrade your video card later to a 9800XT or NV6800 and get a LOT more gaming performance for MUCH less than the $900 you saved.

I DID want to wait for my 2.5 (and I'm glad I did), but for a lot of people the 2.0's are PLENTY fast enough, and are stellar machines (and great values, especially at the price your paid).

EDIT: I'd add another 1.0GB of RAM, though. You'll probably see another nice performance boost for not a lot of $$$. I recommend Crucial.com, as I've bought a lor of Mac and PC (and even printer) RAM from them and its always worked perfectly out of the box (plus, their prices are quite competitive).

Same here. I even called this morning and the lady said she doesn't know why it wouldn't ship today. She did say it would be coming from California. But then again, someone I spoke to earlier in the week said it was coming from China!

G5 delivery

Here are some photos of my G5 being delivered today. I wasn't expecting it
until noon, but the Fedex guy came at 10 AM while I was in the tub.

I personally have a shipping date of Aug. 30th for my Dual 2.5 w/6800 but I will not accept some lower grade card that I was not interested in, in the first place or I would have ordered it in the first place! From a business standpoint Apple is throwing money away sending out replacement cards, sure these cards are the cheaper of their options but still how does this look to shareholders and investors. In essence that is what hurts more not just cancelled orders. And for people trying to convert to Mac from Windows this doesn't sit well. I wonder why they can't grab the market share they are looking for. The market proves people will buy products with less stress attached them. I will cancel my order in a heartbeat if they don't make my date . I don't settle for no one or nothing, you get my money now give me what I ordered in a timely fashion and quit pulling my chain. I won't let this ride....

This is, of course all your choice. Apple has made numerous mistakes in G5gate, mostly related to poor communication both internally and with customers, but with the free 9600 deal, I really feel like they are trying to do the right thing. Obviously, Nvidia told them the cards would be here by now and they aren't. It is costing Apple a lot of money to not ship the machines as it is, and throwing in a free video card is not going to help that.

We tend to forget that this isn't all Apple. Apple is like a sandwich maker that depends on others to supply the bread and the cheese. If the bread doesn't come in, no sandwich. Yet pretty much everyone here who is angry is angry at Apple and not IBM or Nvidia.

Again, the list of screw-ups is long and distinguished on Apple's part. These night before shipping delay emails are rough (please tell me a week ahead of time that it MIGHT slip, if it doesn't, so much the better). I still think offereing a free video card is a pretty good deal. I also got my order upgraded to next-day air by asking. This is all not very fun and I wish I had the machine now, but this is not the first nor will it likely be the last time I have ordered bleeding-edge tech on announce and had to wait.

Hey guys...got some ADC news for us.

Thanks for some info. Even though I didn't get a 6800 and I'm still delayed...odd, but I'll welcome the email. Thanks again.

I am, exact same non-moving boat. Nothing has changed on my order page.

Mind you, I haven't had a chance to check my e-mail at home (the fascists at work block all web-based e-mail).

O my f***ng God, now my order has been changed to 8/30, no email, no nothing just an update on my order status.... THIS SUCKS, APPLE SUCKS!! Everyone that has ordered after me is getting there machine

Yeah, me too! If my computer doesn't ship today, Apple has ALOT of explaining to do!

Edit: I'm on the phone now... not that it matters!

Just as I predicted - THE AUG 20 SHIPPING DATE HAS SLIPPED

My order status has changed as well to 8-30.

Over a week ago I was thinking this was going to be the reality that would hit us.

I will update the spreadsheet a final time today and will then retire and pass the torch to someone else.

I was determined to see this 8-20 thing through and I have.

Final stats update coming tonight. --E

Call me a lucky guy, but I just had them stick my name on a 2.5 box at an Apple store 20 minutes from here. I'm done waiting & my story is over (crossing fingers & driving to apple store).

Dual 2.5GHz PowerMacs Shipping

I placed an order (called the Apple Store) on 8-5-04. Shipping was scheduled for 9-17-04.

As a backup, I called all the Apple Stores within 300 miles of me on 8-18-04 (Wed), including Chicago and Minneapolis --I'm in Iowa and our Des Moines store has not opened yet.

Yesterday, Thursday, 8-19-04 I received a call late in the afternoon from the Apple Store in Minneapolis (Mall of America). They had a few dual 2.5 G5s come in and my name was on one. Only problem was that they could only hold it to closing time (9:30 PM) -- and they were 300 miles away.

So, I fired up the Porsche (there IS no substitute), and off I went.

I made it well before closing, purchased a dual 2.5 G5 and the new 23 inch monitor. Sweet! It is stock (160GB HD, 512 RAM, no airport, and with Apple Care). I had to take the boxes apart to get them into the Porsche and see out the window.

I checked into a nearby hotel and carried the stuff up to my room (3 people suggested that a laptop would be more convenient).

I set up the computer and 23 inch monitor and ran the Apple Hardware Test (AHT). Everything passed with flying colors. The 23 inch monitor is awesome!

Now I'm home in the studio where Crucial's Fed Ex box was waiting for me with six 512MB RAM sticks. I had ordered the RAM online as soon as I got the call from the Apple Store. I already purchased a second drive - Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM. Installing the 6 RAM sticks and the second drive took about 15 minutes. I formatted the second drive and the computer now shows 3.5 GB of RAM.

The AHT has just finished running after installing the RAM and second drive. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes (biting my nails toward the end!)

I cancelled the original Apple Store order. You can only do that by phone and I was on hold for 27 minutes!

I do large format photography with a 16 megapixel back on a Hasselblad. My images are often 700 MB each, and working with them in Photoshop CS on my dual 1.4 GHz G4 has become a huge drain on my time. I'll make some comaprisons between the dual G4 and my new Dual 2.5 G5 using PS CS with large files -- and I'll post them in the forum when I get the results.

So, the word is: Call your nearest Apple Retail Store and get on the list. It worked for me.

Listen guys, I need a favor... I just got off the phone with Linda at Apple. She had the gaul to tell me that it was IMPOSSIBLE for any computer to of shipped that were ordered after June 9th. I told her that there were many people who have already gotten theirs and she said that it wasn't true!

Anyone just like the other guy, she told me that she would need the order numbers of orders placed after June 9th that have received theirs. You can email me privatly at brykken@aug.edu with your name and order number, or you can call her yourself @ 1-800-676-2775 ex. 46472. Her name is Linda. PLEASE HELP ME OUT! If nothing else those people at the call center might be motivated to fix whatever there 'issues' are and that could affect you in the future! If you call, please email and let me know.

brykken@aug.edu

I've been around for awhile so you guys should know that I'm for real!

Also please tell me what apple stores you guys have been getting the machines from... maybe she can call for her damn self!

Well, I got the email. Now I am supposed to call and consent to their new damn date or else they are required by law to cancel my order. This is pure BS! Please help me out guys!

Pushed Back from 8/20 to 8/30

Just received the dreaded e-mail...

My delivery date is now "on or before 8/30."

Confirming and approving this change with Apple is required or they have to cancel the order by law.

I suspect others will soon be in the same boat?

2.5 | 2g RAM | 500g HD | 9800XT

I got the email too so I called. The guy was nice. Said "I don't know why its not shipping" so I said "too bad, I would like to cancel". So in order to cancel he had to bring up another screen to see if its been built (even though he originaly said he didnt have any more information). He then told me he could only cancel if it wasn't at the dock. The good news was it was built and it was at the dock, and its scheduled to go out tomorrow.

So if I believe him, I guess it will be shipping in the next day or so.
I suggest calling and trying to cancel (just bluff) and see if they tell you the same thing.

I really feel sorry for you guys, everybody should have his/her machine by now.

cheers.

Great Grab!

midwestshooter, great story.

Please do post your impressions as my new G5 2.5 will be set up nearly identically (have the 3GB Crucial and 74 GB Raptor sitting on my desk waiting). Except I ordered the Crucial via one of the Apple Store computers while my husband was buying the 2.5 and the 23" monitor ;-) . The Apple guy was cool when he wandered over to see if I needed "help" .

I also manipulate large PS files (scanned electron micrographs) . I'm looking forward to pairing the setup to my sony artisan. Up until now I have only had access to single-proc G4s. Torture at times.

regards,
JT
