The Bamboo Forest
It doesn't have to be a good song and in fact it might be embarrassing... it might even just be a song your mum or dad sang to you when you were young. But what's the earliest song you remember liking?

Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. It came when I was about a year old, but my aunt is a big Billy Joel fan and played it for years. I was about 5 or 6 when I started rock'n out to it.

Oh man this takes me back, good thing it's not that far back for me.

But in all likelyhood, the actual first song I liked was probably the Circle of Life. Or at least one of the Disney songs. The Circle of Life song still has that 'epic' feel even now.

I remember my mom used to put on Cat Stevens' Catch Bull At Four, and a few of the Moody Blues' albums.

I'm not sure of a song in particular, but do remember absolutely loving Sitting At the Wheel when I was like 6. :) :D It's still an awesome song.

My parents say I loved Grand Funk Railroad's "The Loco-Motion" although I had to look up the band just now... that's how much I remember it.

The first song I personally remember liking was The Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey". I had it as a record single even. I'm sure there were ones before that because I would have been decently into elementary school by then though. But that's as far back as my memory goes... I think it sticks out because I liked the music video. I probably thought the skeletons were awesome... :p Whiz-bang special effects!

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town.

The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish,
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish"
The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish"
All through the town.

The door on the bus goes open and shut
Open and shut, open and shut
The door on the bus goes open and shut
All through the town.
(Cover eyes with hands on 'shut' anduncover them on 'open')

The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep"
The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep"
All through the town.

The gas on the bus goes "Glug, glug, glug
Glug, glug, glug, glug, glug, glug"
The gas on the bus goes "Glug, glug, glug"
All through the town.

My earliest memories are early Beatles pop stuff like I Wanna Hold You Hand and Love Me Do and Twist and SHout. My parents played that stuff endlessly.

Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush

She's the artist I've listened to, consistently, for the longest. Now 32 years...
(I should point out I'm 38 soonish)

So young I didn't even know to be embarrassed or amused about it but:
Tina Turner - "Private Dancer" :D
I remember singing it aloud and everything! I can't believe my family wasn't either horrified or completely amused or both. Maybe they were but too nice to ruin the cherished tunes of a little girl. Bless 'em.

Tower of Power (any song). As a young boy, my father would play this all the time.

Also Mason Williams - Classical Gas, album. Listened to it all the time.

The Beatles a little bit because my mother would play it often.

Not a song, but I have strong memories of listening to NPR

The first song I remember liking (as in actually knowing the Artist and Song Title) was Pearl Jam's cover of 'Last Kiss'.

"Mousekadance Disco", from the soundtrack to The New Mickey Mouse Club (the mid-70's edition featuring Lisa Whelchel, who later starred as Blair in Facts Of Life). I was 6 or 7 at the time. I agree, it's cheezy, but I'm not necessarily embarrassed by it, either. (Click here for the original performance, thanks to YouTube.)

The first records I bought myself were 45's of Donna Summer and Lipps, Inc. The first album I bought was Kiss's Ace Frehley (from the late 70s solo albums). I eventually got Paul's and Gene's, but not Peter's, so I never managed to complete the fold-out poster mural. I was more into the Kiss comic-book aesthetic than the music; the only songs that got more than one play was Ace's "New York Groove" and "Fractured Mirror".

Let's just say I'm a child of the 70s, but just barely.

Most of my music collection starts in the early 80s (Human League, A Flock Of Seagulls, later Devo, Men Without Hats, Depeche Mode and Howard Jones). The first album I bought myself that I still listen to on a regular basis to this day is the cassette version of Devo's Oh, No! It's Devo, and I consider that the "true" beginning of my collection.

Hmmm

I will define "liking" as making a concerted effort to learn the lyrics and sign along.

Weird Al Yankovichs - "Like a surgeon"
Third Eye Blind - Jumper
Smash Mouth - Walking on the Sun

The earliest I can remember was some children's cassette that had a song about Tyrannosaurus Rex when I was probably 4 or 5. I have no idea what the name of the tape was.

Other than that I would say "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. That would be the first song I liked when I actually started to get interested in music in Junior High.

Yet another flash of brilliance from the one, the only, Weird Al.

A side question for all you "Al-A-Maniacs" out there: Do you prefer his parodies of famous songs, or his "originals"?

Myself, I tend to prefer his originals: One More Minute, Albuquerque, Dare To Be Stupid. Well, that last one isn't entirely original; it, like Germs and Mr. Popeil, is a "style parody", referencing musical riffs from several songs rather than directly copying only one. Dare To Be Stupid is inspired by Devo; Germs, by Nine Inch Nails; Mr. Popeil, by the B-52's.
