Mac Pro Slow boot... 5 minutes....

My mac pro has been working without any problems till a few days ago. I am getting very slow boot times lasting 5 minutes...

White screen for about 5 sec then the white screen with the apple logo for another 2 - 3min and the a blue screen for another 2 - 3 minutes then the log on windows appears.. I used to be able to boot in about 1 minute tops...

I reset the nvram, did the safeboot, installed a fresh snow leopard os on a separate drive, ran a mem check and nothing... The darn thing is cursed ! :mad:

From time to time I am now getting a line coming down on my screen and a black box with the message that I need to shut of the computer by pressing the shut down button.

Even when I boot from a external drive is still takes forever....

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ran the asd test - everything passed... possible to pass and a mem stick could be bad ?

This is a kernel panic.

Very common symptom of a faulty memory module, though it can mean other things as well.

I would start by booting the system repeatedly, each time with a different memory configuration installed in the same memory channel. Start with 1GB pairs (2x512MB sticks). If one pair gives you a problem and the rest don't, swap one of the two sticks out for one from a good pair and that will tell you which stick is bad. If you have the same issue with all pairs, try a different memory channel on the motherboard.

Process of elimination is key, though you may just have a faulty motherboard.

That is correct...Avinator,do it that.

Then tell as what happen

PD: Be careful to put the fist two 512 ram stick on correct dual channels. (you can check your mac manual)
 
Thanks. We'll do as soon as I get home later tonight and post results asap.
 
I swapped and tested all the mem sticks as suggested and everything is still the same. It appears the mem sticks are ok. Anything else I could try ? :confused:
 
Just noticed something which may or may not have anything to do with my problem. I just ran onyx, maintenance and yasu to confirm that my mac won't reboot after asking for a restart after running the above mentioned apps. huh ? The system just sits until I power it back on manually - On the crash report i am getting the following..... ( partial )

Sounds like you've more or less ruled out software issues with the restore. You've ruled out the likelihood of a failing hard drive and bad memory, as well.

What are you left with?

CPU, motherboard, power supply, and anything else that is, but for troubleshooting purposes shouldn't be, plugged into the machine via USB or FireWire. I'd also remove any unnecessary peripherals like PCI add-on cards, etc.

I'll try to make it to the Apple Store to see what they come up with... Do they charge for a diagnose?
 
All systems go again ! I did a SMC reset on the logic board and everything is back to normal...:D
I am glad was nothing more serious.... ;)
