my 08 uMBP was close to dead silent, in a complete silent study environment.
I can't stand the noise my 320gig early '10 makes.

or atleast I think its the HD. Anyway to know for sure b4 I swap an ssd and find out it's something else making the noise?

My 2009 C2D HDD was loud, lots of crunching. I believe it started happening out of the blue, after I partitioned it, for some reason. 320gb 5400rpm I believe.

2010 i5 500gb 5400rpm was silent.

2010 i7 500gb 5400rpm (current) is silent.

I can hear my HDD working definetly. It's not dead quiet.

But big deal, I'll be throwing this HDD out and put a SSD in it once those new SSD gets released in 2011. This HDD is going to be gone so I won't bother Apple about this little problem :p

2010 15" MBP, stock HD was nearly silent. If I placed my ear against the case I could hear it.

But have since swapped it out for an SSD so it is just silent now. :)

if i try real hard i can hear my stock 5400 rpm 320gb drive. However it is not loud in any way. what bothers me more is that on a wooden table, that might be slightly irregular, i can feel my mbp vibrate a tiny bit on the places next to the trackpad where my palms rest to type. that just annoys the heck out of me.

when i used the 7200 rpm mine was loud sometimes.

but id have to assume that 500rpm would be quite 90% of the time.

I believe I hear the HD when Time Capsule is backing up. Also occasionally when the fans go on. But it is not loud and seems to be on par with my prior 08MBP.
