Hi everyone - I'm having a little trouble trying to restore my Time Machine backup. The backstory - A couple days ago I stupidly deleted some old backups in Finder (I know you're not supposed to but it had worked in the past so I figured I wouldn't have any problems). The backups deleted but I couldn't empty the trash so after googling for a bit I used Trashit!. It seemed like it worked until I rebooted and my computer basically went back to factory default. I wasn't too worried since I had just backed up with TM.

I booted to the install cd and tried the Restore from Time Machine feature. Except, when I go there it doesn't find/read any of my backups. So booting back into Mac OS, I launch Time Machine and my backups are there! So I just restored everything from my user folder inside TM. However, there are still lots of settings/certain applications (like Growl) which disappeared which I assume are under root. Trying to restore those files causes an error.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get TM from the install cd to read the backups I still have? Thanks for reading (sorry it's so long!) and your help.
