I love the iPhone 4, except for...

It sounds more like an issue with your particular phone rather than the devices physical design - I have a 3GS and that only needs to be on half volume to hear the other person clearly, full volume can sometimes be way too loud. I don't think Apple would mess with the existing call volume when designing the iPhone 4.
Well, in most situations, I can hear the person speaking at the other end holding the phone several inches away at about 75% volume.

On my 3G, I could barely hear the speaker in speakerphone. I was actually using the speakerphone and putting it up to my ear. I had to jailbreak and modify some plist files to even get it to a passable volume level.
For the 4, the volume is great. I can actually hear my volume while driving a car now. It also works effectively as a speakerphone.

My wife got her iPhone 4 the day before I did (her's came in the first, early, shipment). She called me to tell me that she had gotten it, but couldn't figure out why I sounded so muffled. She would switch to speakerphone and could hear me fine, but when she tried to listen through the earpiece, it sounded like I was underwater.
She later texted me to let me know that she had not removed the plastic wrap from around the phone.
my mate did that. He didnt have any screen protectors so he peeled back and cut the stuff the original phone packaging used but left the earpiece covered. He said I shouldnt tell anybody so keep it to yourselves

Not all of them. To me, the volume on my iPhone 4 sounds just fine.

He´s not as critical than me, but he says sometimes outside it is difficult to hear the other person.
It´s ok inside in a quiet room of course, but as soon as you go outside and there´s cars and other background noise, it is very difficult to hear the other person. Never had this with other phones.
Nope. Like I said, my hearing is perfect.
I think iPhone 4 is even quieter than the 3G and 3GS. I had this same problem with those too, but it wasn´t this bad.
The speakerphone is much better though, than it used to be.

I have hearing problems, and my iPhone 4 works quite well. I do not even have the volume all the way up.
Two nights ago I was doing sound at this casino lounge I work at once in a while and had to make a quick call mid show, I could STILL hear the person I was talking to, albeit with my other ear plugged.
Mine works fine. I'm not saying that you're a liar or anything, but I hear people pretty well. Have you tried using headphones? Is it any better?
With ear/headphones it´s good of course.
In public places I always have to squeeze the phone really hard to my ear and plug the other ear with my finger and I still find myself yelling to my friends "speak up, I can´t hear you because of my damn iPhone!".
It´s quite embarrassing in public places.

Or by coincidence just mine and my friends iPhones are broken.
But seriously I´m thinking if I would hear your phones who say it´s loud enough, I´m betting it would be exact same volume I have. In other words I just don´t believe you guys being enough critical or haven´t tested this properly. And there are others who agree with me.
So obviously this is a big controversy.
