A 5200 RPM drive? Ugh....no thanks.

actually do to the platter density and build of the drive its just as fast as the 5400rpm if not faster there is an article somewhere on macrumors were hellhammer explains it if i remember correctly

Yeah, it should be faster than e.g. 500GB 5400rpm drive because that 1TB is made of three ~333GB platters while 500GB is made of two 250GB platters. When the drive is denser, it can read/write more data power per round. 333GB is around 33% denser than 250GB so in theory, the 500GB drive has to spin 1.33 rounds to read/write the same data. 5400rpm is only ~4% more than 5200rpm so 1TB should be faster. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any good benchmarks :(

However, 750GB 5400rpm should be the fastest 5400rpm drive as it's made of two 375GB platters.

Is the data written simultaneously on three platters? Like a RAID setup or something? I'd assume that if data is written to only one platter at a time, it'll go at normal speed.

I just use SSDs for speed :) Your HDD is either fast or it's not, there shouldn't be so much talk about speed diffs when you can just throw a SSD in the optibay and get the BOBW

That said, 1TB is nuts in a laptop, unless it's your main machine.

Thanks. That's good to know.

Unfortuneately for me, I have a SR MBP15.

Maybe I need a new laptop. :)

At least 750GB will fit, it's normal 9.5mm drive. It's also faster than the 1TB since it's made of two 375GB platters that spin at 5400rpm ;)

Both Samsung and Toshiba make 1tb 2.5" drives as well...here in Canada they're actually cheaper than the WD, and both spin at 5400rpm if that still worries anyone.

For some of us it is. I currently own an 8 year old desktop PC running Windows XP that I use as an HTPC (plan on replacing it with a Mac Mini in the next year or so), and a 13" MBP. My wife has a 3 year old Vaio. That's all we can afford. Must be nice to be able to own a nice "main machine" and have a MacBook Pro as a secondary computer. Maybe I'll be there someday in life, maybe.
