I just updated this via the Software Update on my early 2008 MBP now my DVD is locked to region 1 and I can't change it.... Yes I know that you can change it only 5 times but I only ever had it set to Region 4 thus only ever changed once when the first DVD was put into the system...

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this of if there's a way to fix this issue because I now can't watch/rip any of my DVDs. I've tried XRegion but it doesn't seem to work...

If it used to work, get it fixed by Apple even if it's out of warranty. Complain a lot.

It still does, on older machines.
On newer machines the drives are hardware limited, so that you can no longer access the data around the drive firmware.

That makes sense because on my old G4 Region X worked, this one I get a message about the drive being locked due to the firmware...

Although a bit off topic I don't understand why DVD drives on computers are locked to region while 99% of all home players and portable players now are region free...
