Hi
I have for long times wished I'd have a small server to facilitate sftp transfers, some web sharing (html, php, maybe some sql), iCal sharing etc. No heavy duty ****, and purely for my own use.
Now I have a broadband connection, with a static IP and a "modem", which allows me full NAT&filtering abilities.
I also have an old G3 iBook (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_600.html) base specs, except full RAM and a 120 GB HD. It's currently running Tiger (not server). I'd really like to avoid any investments as it would not suit my budget.
I would very much wish I could persuade this old friend to continue it's loyal service as the abovementioned server.
I'd like to avoid the linuxPPC -approach as I must admit Linux is not really my strong suite. I'd rather do it with macOS, although it might necessitate usage of the terminal (I do not need a GUI for all of it).
Questions:
- Can you use a non-server version of Tiger for these things
- How to set up web sharing, through the OS application or do you install some other (3rd party) server here? Are there any free ones?
- What to use for sftp?
- Is there some way to make it (even CLI-ways) remotely controllable? I know it's a laptop so it has a screen and keyboard, but that's beside the point.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Pekka
P.S. (did a search came up short - some posts of use as LAN server, none as WAN server)
