For a while now, the Safari 5.0 browser on my wife's MacBook Pro has been slow and sluggish with repeated crashes. So much so she started using Chrome.

Within the last week Safari on my MBP has been doing the same. Unreliable, slow, sluggish and crashing.

Anyone know what might be causing these symptoms?

Have you tried resetting Safari, clearing your cache, cookies, etc.?
What extensions (if any) have you installed?
Are you viewing sites with Flash?
Is your Flash version current?
Does this only happen with particular sites, or all sites?

Yep, frequently reset and clear cache, along with cookies.
No extensions at all.
Flash is current and happens on almost any website.

Make sure any plug-ins are up to date.
Try turning off any ad-blockers.
Check your firewall settings.
You might try deleting: /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and then restart Safari.

Maybe post a recent Safari crash log, especially the portion related to the thread that crashed and the Binary Images section.

Does resetting Safari and clearing your cache cause you to lose all username and password info for websites?

See the attached picture ;)
