Aspyr has officially announced that they will be publishing Sid Meier's Civilization V for the Mac this fall.
Developed by Firaxis Games, Sid Meier’s Civilization V reinvigorates the classic turn-based strategy genre with an astonishing new engine built from the ground-up for this flagship edition of the Sid Meier’s Civilization franchise. Players are introduced to an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features that deliver a fully immersive experience. Players build and defend their empire on their quest to become the greatest ruler the world has ever known.
The Mac version is expected "this holiday season" though no specific date is given. Specific dates, details on pre-orders and availability are to follow. Notably absent in the press release is any mention of Steam as a distribution method. Aspyr does state they have discounted their existing strategy games on GameAgent by 40% in celebration of the announcement.

We had previously reported about the imminent launch of the title for Mac.

more games for mac....

Ain't it great?

I have no interest in this particular game, but the more mainstream games that show up on the Mac, the more games will be developed. It's been a nasty catch-22 for a while that's finally worked itself out somewhat, so we're starting to see more gaming on the Mac because more games are starting to show up, which means we'll see more gaming, which means more games… you get the picture.

I do hope it comes to Steam. I've only started buying games again because of Steam.

And hopefully those of us who already bought it on Steam can download it for the Mac (for free of course), just like all the other Steam games. I mean, it requires Steam to even install in the first place, so all this should be a given.

Unlikely, due to porting costs. It will probably work like SupCom2: Buy the Mac version separately, register it on Steam.

Already been playing a Wine version. It's a great game and I'll definitely be buying the official port, though the Wine version works flawlessly.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Yeeeessssss! :) I'll have to check out the sys reqs before I get too excited however. I've a 13" MBP. Hope it's enough...

This is the only way I'll buy it is if I can get the mac and PC version through steam.

Why is this front-page news???

Because its one of the biggest games to hit the Mac yet?

Sorry, in case you forgot, we're on MAC Rumors. NOT iToy Rumors!

Really glad this is getting ported - if the other Civ games are anything to go buy, its going to be pretty great!

You wont get it for free since its been ported by Aspire and obviously they need to make money. It'll be a separate purchase, as you would expect it to be...

Not that there is much reason to play the mac version since it's a terrible port filled with bugs and performance issues.

Aspyr didn't hold the digital distribution rights to Civ IV, so 2K was allowed to make the game SteamPlay. I'm sure Aspyr wasn't happy about it, and it's the only Aspyr product on Steam. They probably worked out a different licensing arrangement this time around.

How is this game for some one who has never played it is this a strategy base game or what?

I really love Civ 5, but it's too darn slow. Even running it on my PC that's a quad core i5 + GTX 460s in SLI w/ 8GB of RAM, late in the game it starts taking 30+ seconds between turns.

On my latest MBP i7 w/ 8GB of RAM it's even worse. It's only playable with medium graphics at most, and the lag between turns late in the game is just sad.

If the normal 15% or so decrease in performance from PC -> Mac applies here as well, I think I'll just stick to dual booting to play it.

2k pays them to port the game, once it's ported 2k can do what they want. 2k owns the distributing rights of their own game.

aspyr is just the code monkeys on the port.

Yeah I think that the release of Steam was what got the ball really rolling. Apple started to work with game developers and graphics cards manufacturers to ensure good performance and experience. The best is probably yet to come.

No, usually Aspyr retains distribution rights of the digital versions of the games that they port. This is what they said when Civ IV initially appeared as not being SteamPlay:

"Aspyr does not control the pricing and partnerships for the Civilization Mac titles digitally and therefore we have not been part of the arrangements 2K made with Steam in launching their Civilization Mac titles. 2K/Take Two is the publisher of the Civilization Mac titles digitally even through our own store, gameagent.com. This is a unique digital relationship for us and typically we DO make the decisions for digital partnerships. Aspyr is still available as the developer for your game support issues. When it comes to these outside relationships it is not our call."

Anyway, we should hear soon whether there will be a Steam version. From their blog:

The game will come in both boxed and digital flavors, both of which will be available for preorder in the next few weeks at GameAgent.com and other retailers. Though we can’t say anything specific just yet, we’ve got some great preorder perks planned for GameAgent shoppers!

Hopefully Steam is one of the "other retailers."

That would not make any sense though, I man it's a Steam game. It requires Steam to even play. With all the other Mac games on Steam, you pay for the game and once and can download it for either OS at any time (or have it installed on both OS's at once).

For anyone who hasn't played it yet, it is a fantastic game. It's already starting to go on sale (usually $10 off) on some sites.
