Will the new Apple TV receive whatever is on my iPad?? Such as if we're looking at pictures or videos, YouTube, safari web surfing...

You can stream only music and video from ipad to apple tv 2nd gen.

I was under the impression that this is what AirPlay was for.

Yep you should be able to do what the OP was asking about once Airplay is activated in November.

I'm not sure about the Mac. Some people say they think Airplay will work from a Mac as well but I doubt it. Apple certainly never indicated it. They did say you will be able to send videos you find on the web, photos, audio, and media from iOS apps (including 3rd party ones) to your Apple TV using your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad with Airplay. That has been confirmed by Apple.
