A lot of people talk of the 1080p performance (youtube, Hulu etc) with the new MBAs, but how about decoding H.264 HD, which a lot of European TV channels use as encoding.
AFAIK (personal experience and from the Elgato forums) this tends to be more cpu than gpu bound, and indeed my 2,0GHz Mini is struggling with it using EyeTV hybrid as the source.
The Mini is using the Intel P7350 processor with 3mb cache, but is driving a 30" 2560x1600 display.
Q: How do you think the new MBAs would fare here? (or have you tried with the old ones, which uses the same cpus?)
Q: The new MBAs are using the SU9400/9600 for the 11" and SL9400/9600 for the 13" - the latter equipped with twice the cache of the 11 AND my Mini - would that be likely to make a difference???
I also have an older 15" MBP (pre-unibody) with nvidia 8600m GT graphics - this scores slightly higher in Geekbench than the Mini, which in turn is on par with the 2,13 MBA - but this is synthetic benchmarks...not H.264 decoding...
I guess I would like a 13" with a fast processor, but can easily do with the 64GB storage, as I keep all music, photos, videos on a NAS anyway. Well, can't have everything.
