Time Machine to New Hard drive

I am pretty sure on this, but need validation.
I am installing a new hard drive soon to my macbook, and have all my files backed up with my time machine drive. I know I use migration assistant, and how, but should I format the drive before I transfer from time machine, or will the migration format for me?
