MBP i7 Beach Balls?!

Hi everyone,

I know that this is a known issue but I have a 2.66 MBP 15 inch i& with 4 gb of ram and a 7200 hard drive.

At least a few times a day I am getting the beach balls for around 10 seconds at a time. I am only running things like Skype, Safari and iTunes.

It is really bugging me to get this on a machine of this spec.

What do you think I should do? Would Apple repair or replace the unit?
 
Softwares issue, not your hardware.

I have the same spec.


Again like the other said. Check your System Monitor to see what is hogging your computer down.
 
I get beach balls all the time too. For 10 seconds or so at a time. Even when running only Safari and Mail. Ridiculous if you ask me.

And don't tell me that Flash is the culprit. That should have no effect on an i7. It didn't do this when new.

You need to understand something, it doesn't matter how powerful a processor is, if something is coded poorly, performance will be dirt no matter what. Though in your case, sounds like the HDD could be the culprit (With my i7, the stock HDD caused 10+ second beachballs).
 
Safari, iTunes and Skype alone take up over 1GB of space on RAM, plus add all of the other junk that is being used by root, printers, wireless externals etc. it can eat up a lot of memory, causing a slow computer. What you can do is run a hardware test to make sure you don't have faulty RAM or a faulty HDD. If your computer passes that test, try reloading Snow Leopard not it. Archive and install.

How do I run a hardware test? Maybe a new hard-drive would fix the problem but I have heard that this is a common problem with this generation of Macbook Pros...
