Surely all external hard drives work with OS X

Hi
Having chosen a useful large external hard drive I find it says 'Windows only'.
Surely, though the software will not work, all I need to do is format the HD and it will work.
The machine is:
Seagate FreeAgent 500GB External Hard Drive USB2.0 16MB.
