When I insert an audio CD the superdrive runs at full speed and the cooling fan increases to 1500rpm, the CD's play without problems but the speed never goes down until it is ejected. When I insert DVD's the drive is silent and the fan does not increase at all, is this normal or is the drive defective?

Which kind of iMac do you have?

Slot loading drives produce all sorts of crazy noises. If this is how it reads CDs, but reads DVDs nicely and quietly, I wouldn't be too concerned.

I have a new 27" i7 and the superdrive is made by Hitachi/LG. I played with it a little more last night and the fan does not increase in speed but whenever I insert any audio CD to listen to the drive runs at a faster speed then it should. All DVD movies, however are silent. I did see some software on the web that would slow the drive down but figure that I listen to Audio CD's so rarely it's not worth it. I don't know if it is even worth having this thing looked at
