Paul the octopus, who shot to fame during this year's FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa for his flawless record in predicting game outcomes, has died, his aquarium in Germany said today.

"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a sombre statement.

Happened yesterday......but it is a sad day for the world of soccer...or football..

He made the world cup fun! :D

Apparently, a male octopus will only live a couple of months after mating. My guess is that Paul took advantage of the groupies his fame attracted this summer, and in doing so his fate was sealed.

I have it under good authority that the only thing he was eating was mussels.

So he died with a smile on his face?

Well, if he was still smiling after a couple of months with the groupies, he was a fool. A fool octopus. That's one of the worst kind an octopus can be. A fool octopus, who's smiling in the water because he's had sex some months ago is the joke of the natural world.

Weren't ze Germans none too happy with his predictions during the World Cup? I'm not saying they had anything to do with his death...but I'm not saying they didn't either.:D

No, they would have sent a U-boat.

I remember hearing that Paul the Octopus was getting death threats from opposing team's fans. He probably couldn't cope with the pressure anymore and decided to end it all.

R.I.P. Paul the Cephalopod, may you choose other victories in your dirt nap.
