USB drive on left side of notebook doesnt work!

For some reason when I plug anything into my macbook pro(2006), in the usb on the left side..it doesnt work! The one on the right does but Im unable to use my Hard drive and certin other things at the same time because they get in the way of each other. this would be solved if the usb on the other side worked. Anyone out there have solutions? it would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
 
What happens when you plug the device into the computer on the left side? Waht does it say in the USB tab in System Profiler?

Have you tried an SMC reset? Or a PRAM reset?

No, I havent tried these SMC reset, Or a PRAM reset.
Im not sure what those are either.
