I (along with apparently countless others on this forum and Apple's own support pages) have had tons of problems with iPhoto '11 and the upgrading of the photo database.
After calling AppleCare and spending more than 2 hours on the phone with them - first for 20 minutes with first line support and then with second tier support, they were unable to solve my issues. I'm not going to detail everything we went through other than to say we deleted plists and databases, created new ones, restored old ones from time machine, repaired databases and nothing worked.
At the end of the day, they sent me an app that recorded me opening and closing iPhoto '11 two times so they could analyze what's going on. The also had me do a screen recording via quicktime. I dropped all that into my iDisk public folder for them for them to pick up and analyze.
During the course of my 2 hour phone call, I told the second tier guy that I'd bought a family pack of iLife '11 and hadn't installed it yet on my second machine, a MBP. His advice, "hold off upgrading to iLife '11." He told me that just that morning he and other tech support people who have been fielding hundreds of calls related to the iPhoto database upgrade problem had a meeting with Apple engineers who, "are working furiously" to create a fix. His guess was that sometime in the next week or two Apple will issue an update.
In the meantime, with regards to my personal situation, engineers are going to analyze the problem with the information I sent them and I should expect a response with corrective action by Thursday next week.
