A new symbol appeared yesterday on my iphone4. I was out running and so had the "map my run" app open and also had checked the iphone maps app too. It is top right hand corner...a padlock with an almost compete circle round it like the @ only with the gap on the RHS with a arrow head on the end.

That means your phone has been "locked" into portrait only mode. In other words, it won't rotate the screen, even when the accelerometer detects a change in orientation.
