External HD for DJing and Windows/Ubunting

I need an external hard drive for music for DJing.

I want to get into it, but I want to make sure the hard drive is suitable for playing/mixing/manipulating live music.

Any advice? Will 5400rpm be fast enough? Firewire powered fast enough? Is there a way to make it compatible on pc as well so i can sync my music from my pc (ubuntu or windows)?

Also, it'd be cool if the transfer rate was sufficient for producing music. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
 
Any Firewire HDD will be fast enough for your needs, even if it has 5,400RPM HDD inside, as those offer 70MB/s and more and FW 800 offers up to 75MB/s. Just make sure, that your external audio device, if you use such, is compatible with that brand, especially if the audio device is connected via Firewire and supports daisy chaining (even if it is the last item in the chain).

If you use compressed audio, the data rate per song will be 30KB/s, if you use uncompressed it will be around 170KB/s or so, thus even USB might suffice.
