ive been using my mac preview app, but for some reason when i click on the icon nothing happens. when i drag a picture to the icon then and only then does the app respond. is this normal, if not how can i restore this particular app without losing any other info on my mac?

Sounds normal. It'll just open up the app (the menu bar should change when you click on the icon) but there will be no window for it since you have not selected a file to look at. If you go to the File menu and select the Open option, you can open a file on your hard drive.
