some quick math apple server 4k.

apple base 2.8 2.5k apple server osx .5k so 3k.

buy a 1tb hdd from newegg 90
buy 4 sticks of 4gb ram ram from superbiiz about 360

so I spend about 3450 for
same cpu
same osx
same hdds
and 16gb ram. vs 8gb from apple.
Am I missing something?

4k? I'm seeing 3k on the US store..

It might not seem like such a big saving on the US Store, but it is at least on the Aussie store. OS X Server is $700 AUD! But the base server Mac Pro is only $300 more than the base Mac Pro.

Time for iOS Server? Same plastic box as Apple TV but with MDP instead of HDMI?

Usual expectation is to be able to store a sizeable amount of data on a server machine - AppleTV only has 8GB NAND chips.

Mac Mini Server (with its 2x500Gb HDDs) will have to stay as the smallest form factor Apple Server.

They have now reduced the price of the base model MacPro to $3199
