Is there a way in OS X SL to enable audio out on both the HDMI and optical outputs at the same time.

I believe so. I recently discovered that the Audio Midi Setup Utility had been changed (Utilities>Audi Midi Setup). In it you can now add an aggregate device by clicking on the little plus in the bottom left. Then you just check which sources you want hear together.

It's also handy to note that you can switch between the audio outputs and your new aggregate output easily by option clicking the speaker icon in the menu bar.

You know what's ridiculous but works? You run Soundflower, pipe all your audio to that, and then run *two* copies of LineIn (a utility from the guys who make Audiohijack). Each copy of LineIn listens to Soundflower but outputs to a different output.

Its the only way I've gotten it to work.
