who would buy a MBP standard res?

who would (at this point) purchase a standard config MBP? For approx $100 more you can get high res (glossy or anti-glare) apple seems to be making everything higher res, iphone, ipad, and MBA. Is it still worth it to walk into an apple store or retailer and buy a standard config MPB?

Wait 'til you get into your 40's and ask again...

Not everyone can see the higher resolutions... :cool: :)

If they work for you, then certainly the extra $100 makes sense.

good point. i also have bad eyes. no problems with iphone or ipad. i just cant determine how much of a big deal the high res upgrade is. also whats the future of mbp?
 
Sadly, I'm young and hate the high res screen. The fonts are so tiny. Its fine on my iPhone 4 though.

And just try hi-res when you hit 65. It's a lot harder. I looked at a 13" MBA in the Apple Store and it the screen is way too hard to read.
 
Right now it is preference.
I hardly ever run into situations where the text is too small. I like that menus and buttons take much less space and the terminal, in Browser and in Word I can easily change the zoom level or font size. Even iTunes supports bigger and smaller fonts.
Youtube movies or any flashplayers are pretty small in their box and you pretty much have to zoom full screen. Browser zoom doesn't go well with Flash unfortunately but everything else.

Still I think once they really switch the whole line of products to higher res screens, they will have to implement some sort of dpi change like windows offers it to keep everyone happy. My dad complains about a 17" screen at standard res because he sees no reason why he shouldn't get everything at a size that he likes (he doesn't care about screen real estate) and the screen is a little further away too.
I wouldn't want to miss my HR screen and I think it is a must have upgrade if one buys such an expensive computer in the first place. I also think that in the last years many GUI elements have grown too big and take up too much space at the old resolutions we used to have a few years back.
 
The other thing is that if you are using dual displays and spanning your desktop the lower resolution is closer to most monitors dpi. This makes the crossing screens easier.

The iPhone 4 has resolution independence. So the size of fonts is exactly the same as on the previous iPhones. But because of the increased PPI, everything is sharper.

Unfortunately on the Mac, higher resolution just means smaller fonts.
 
standard res? isnt it by default hi res? when i was buying the 17" i only saw an option for hi res (pre-selected default) or anti glare...
 
for me it was a personal decision, had a look and play with a macbook pro with the high-ress and just didnt like it but i do have access to some nice screens and have (when needed) used 2048x1080.
 
I prefer the standard resolution at this point.

I like where my 15" is it, because any higher and I start to get sick when using the notebook for long periods of time.

While taking a break every 30 minutes helps ease the eyes, it's really hard when I'm working on a big school project or I'm in a class that requires me to work on a computer. It's difficult in one of my programming classes just because I can't walk away every 30 minutes during a lecture.

17" MacBook Pro only comes in high res (1920x1200)

15" MacBook Pro comes in either standard res (1440x900) or high res (1680x1050).

13" MacBook Pro only comes in standard res (1280x800)

13" MacBook Air only comes in high res (1440x900)

11" MacBook Air only comes in high res (1366x768)
 
I am quite happy with the 1440 x 900. I could probably go with a higher res but I really don't need any more stuff on my screen. Maybe it's because I remember the days when 1024x768 was great, anything more then that now I am pretty happy with, no need to go to extremes.

what makes the 13 inch mba high res and not the standard 15 mbp, just screen size? in the hdtv world 1080p is high def in any screen size.

Dots per inch.

The 15" MBP at 1440x900 is 110dpi, about the same as the 113dpi for the 13" MBP.

The 13" MBA is 128dpi, about the same as the 129dpi of the 1680x1050 15" MBP. The 11" MBA exceeds all of them at 135dpi

then why buy 15 standard res? for another $100 you get high res.

By that I assume you mean the 13"? Which I agree, it will.

This whole font size nonsense really wouldn't be an issue if Apple had proper resolution independence built into OS X. Something that was promised for Leopard, but never made it.
 
I take what I said back earlier. I went into Best Buy with the intentions of switching out my new 13" Air for the 13" Pro, and I couldn't do it because I noticed the difference in the screens side by side. Typically, they only have the 11" out on display, but this time, the 13" Air and 13" Pro were side by side. Wow, what I difference. Its not a HUGE difference, but its a big one. I walked out of the store without anything and kept my 13" Air, and went purchased a Superdrive at the Apple Store. No way, I'll buy the Macbook Pro right now! I'll wait until next year to see whats new, then I'll see if I want one - but as of right now, the 13" Air is my choice of Macbook!

Another thing, the Superdrive is 10 bucks HIGHER than the Apple Store. No idea why its higher at Best Buy.
 
i've never been to the point where I said to myself, darn I really wish I had the high-res screen. And I use my mbp for work everyday, when i'm at home I just connect it to my 30inch dell and than resolution becomes a non-issue (2560x1600)
