I recent put an SSD into my 2010 mac pro (3.33ghz and 12gb ram). I restored from the 1tb original HD into my new SSD and then using System Utilities made it the new boot drive.

However, booting still takes over 1 minute plus. Is this expected performance? Seems wholly underwhelming as it not any better than the orginal HD.

I suspect I set up something incorrectly. Note the drive does have bootcamp with Win 7 on it.

Any thoughts from the community would be appreciated.

"System Utilities" ? What's that? Did you mean Disk Utility?

Maybe it's a permissions problem. Try repairing permissions. I'm not sure it will work but it's worth a shot.

1. Reset the default startup disk to Mac OS X

2. Zap the PRAM (hold Command-Option-P-R at boot, release at second chime sound)

That should get it booting quickly.

A fresh install was the key to fast boot times on my MBP. Cut it down from 35 sec. To 15.

I found one culprit that help cut the boot time to 28 - 30 seconds.

I had an external 1 TB drive attached via USB to the Apple LED 27 monitor.

I removed this connection and boot time instantly dropped from 57 seconds to 28 seconds. So this was partly the culprit.

Resetting PRAM reduced the time initially from 73 seconds to 57 seconds.

I am curious how people are getting 20 seconds? If what I am experiencing is true then it has to do with the devices attached slowing the boot times.

Anyone else experienced the improvement by removing certain devices like printer, hard disks, etc. Mac must confused or loading drivers or just looking for other possible startup disks other than my SSD even though SSD is set for startup?

ONe additional thing to note -- I have Win 7 via bootcamp. This is still very slow to load -- at about 60 seconds exactly.

When I restart in Mac OS X -- -- boot time stays right around 30 seconds.

Curious to see what others have done to improve both these things.

setting the right boot volume in the system preferences can also help. Otherwise, the computer spends around 10 sec searching for a valid OS X intallation on all your drives....

Also check your system prefs - user - start items (term?) .

Just have Microsoft Database Daemon which is for Notifications from Outlook without having outlook startup.

The startup disk is set to the SSD -- anything specific I have to make sure my disk volumes are set correctly?

Also anyone have experiencing reducing boot times in Windows?
