I have a 320GB Firewire WD Passport external hard drive, which I use to make a nightly bootable clone of my boot drive. Regardless of whether I'm trying to boot from it or just restarting my computer normally, the drive doesn't show up until I unplug and plug it back in. This works but it's annoying, and I would love to fix this permanently if anyone knows how.

In case it matters the system is a mid 2009 Mac Pro.

Thanks in advance!

Are you using time machine with this drive as the clone?
Try going into Disk Utility and seeing what type of format you have on the drive, should be Mac OSX Extended Journal.
If not, can be MSFAT...but sounds like your firewire cable is not connecting right, try a different one, or wiggling it in the port, if it disconnects then it may be faulty.

Otherwise, not sure why it would not boot the first time.
