I have jailbroken my 3G about every time a new iOS comes out and it seems that it runs really slow. It takes forever for it to do pretty much anything, and sometimes locks up for a second or 2. anybody got any ideas? thanks.

Downgrade back to 3.1.3 and that should solve your problem. Sluggish 3G's on 4.0 and higher usually tend to be slow because the 3G doesn't have a fast enough CPU and RAM.

3G is slow on 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.1.

However, it was reported that 4.2 has improved on 3G.

I second PsstGreek... go back to 3.1.3 for now
