I have been having so many problems with Office 2011. Hoping to solve the worst of them, I just installed a "critical update," and now it's worse.
At first Word 2011 would give me an error message about "suddenly quitting" when I actually DID quit. It would not save my normal template or prefs. Now, with the update, Word 2011 suddenly quits when I go to CLOSE a doc.
The only help I have received from MS is to totally uninstall Office 2011. They do not say what to do after that.
I am going back to Office 2008 for now. Any assists or sympathy would be welcome.

(my problem probably started when I insisted on using my own toolbar and hiding the default ribbon, and I set keystrokes for shortcuts, etc.)
