anyway to remove the battery icon & just have the %

Not yet (that I know of). Maybe you can replace the battery icons with your own transparent ones.

I'm still waiting for Battery Control for 4.x

I think he wants this for the space (ie. have more room on the status bar) so a transparent icon wouldn't really help...
 
yes there is a tweak in cydia, i believe its called, status bar battery icon hide. i have it on my iphone 4 running 4.1 limera!n. this will do exactly what you want!

opps, this requires winterboard though
 
Yeah, there is not way to do it without WB (yet). All solutions out there give you an "empty" spot, not really nice looking.

I'll maybe go have a look at this since I'm trying to change the colour of the battery, and I'm learning how to do themes by stripping down other peoples themes.

is it a straightforward process to change the battery symbol (specifically just new colours)?
