I have iMovie, version 8.0.6 (821). I am working on a video project involving dozens of audio clips, many of which are actually video clips set to "audio only" put over other video clips, often with several overlapping. I wonder if using the "detach audio" option, or something along those lines, might have been much more efficient and allowed me to avoid this problem, but what's done is done.
As the number of overlapping "audio only" clips mounted, iMovie's responsiveness diminished greatly. By the time I was nearly finished, I had to wait about five seconds or more for each and every action. However, I patiently waited through this, as I was nearly done.
When I put on the sound clip (an "audio only" video clip) which would have marked the conclusion of my project--that is, the very last sound clip I needed to add--it turned out that it was one more sound clip than iMovie could handle. It froze immediately, and the spinny wheel never went away. I force quit'd the program, but it had autosaved after I put the sound clip in (not quite in the right place or the right volume, so it's still not yet finished); now iMovie freezes immediately every time I even so much as move my cursor into the upper-left window of that project.
I am currently unable to edit my project further, even to remove the dreaded sound clip that pushed it over the edge. How can I do anything more to it, either finish it or simply get rid of a few sound clips so I can do something else, without having it freeze up?
I have Mac OS X, Version 10.6.4.
