3G Jailbreak

Hi All,
I keep up to date on my device iPhone 4 and have all my SHSH's backed up but a friend is trying to Jailbreak his iPhone 3G which is on 4.1.

Whats the easiest way please? he doesnt need an unlock. I have been researching this for him but a bit confused. I previously used the Jailbreakme website to do his phone on 3.1.2 but he has upgraded since then.

Some advice please?

There's several tools available, but the best I'd recommend is Pwnage Tool.

Are you sure, I thought the Pwnage Tool could be used if the device was only previously jailbroken but not using the Spirit jailbreak. Which I though the Jailbreakme site effectively used? or am I wrong?
 
PwnageTool is only for MAC tho yes? Windows based user here.

Please don't add to my confusion or others by posting incorrect information.

I have tried Limera1n and greenpois0n on this iPhone 3G on firmware 4.1 and it doesn't come out of DFU. I am sure the original release of this SHatter exploit said it was meant for iPhone 4 device's only but has been edited to work with others just not as far back as the iPhone 3g.

Actually, now you are confused too, none of the recent jailbreak tools utilize the SHAtter exploit. Greenpoison and Limerain, as far as I can tell are for 3GS and up though. Redsn0w and Pwnage Tool can jailbreak all devices, but both use the same exploit as limerain, from Dev Team Blog:
The release of limera1n has (thankfully!) averted the burning of 2 bootrom holes at once (both his and SHAtter). Releasing SHAtter now would be a complete waste of a perfectly good bootrom hole in light of limera1n, and so it can be held until Apple closes limera1n’s hole. While there’s no guarantee that Apple won’t also close SHAtter by then, it provides a ray of hope for devices after Apple’s bootrom respin.
