Connected / not connected - Safari issue

Clicking on my bookmarks, some give me the appropriate site, others give me "You are not connected to the Internet". But it is different bookmarks each time I restart Safari that give me the error message. It makes no difference if I type in the problematic URLs. Firefox does the same (different error message). Mail - fine. iChat some recent connection issues.

3 year old Mac Mini, Snow Leopard, all software up to date. Ethernet connection to 50Mb broadband.

Any suggestions?
