Question on iOS 4.2

Yes it does. Type something in safari google search And search. Then close safari and all it's pages. Open safari and boom it opens to search and recent history idiotic menu appears
This doesn't happen on mine. Maybe it's just a bug that is getting worked out. I'm running 4.2 GM (not version b).
same here, and trust me, it does, you may be doing something wrong, it;s been around since Beta 1
Ok I just tried it again and mine only pulls up recent searches when I tap on Search after opening a new window. It doesn't automatically come up when I open safari. I even quit it from the task bar...

Ok I think I know what you're talking about, but it only does it to me when open a new window in Safari. It'll default in the Search box and pull up recent searches... Is this what you're referring to?
If so, I have no idea of work arounds for this .. It is pretty annoying now that you mentioned it, but I never really paid it much attention before.

yeap, truly aggravating and i'm sure a lot of people will start complaining as soon as it is released. I know i will...plus, think privacy as well. I know auto complete is still there when you begin to type, but when it just shows you right away, not good.
Perfect example, if a special someones birthday is arriving, or any special occasion and you decide to search some stuff on google, then the wifey or whoever picks up the ipad and opens a new window, and BOOM, right in your face, necklace, diamond earings, etc...whatever...and it's not like it's easy to clear history instantly in iOS. leave Safari - go to general - go to safari - click empty cache, etc...plain stupid
the more I hear about iOS4.2 the less I like it. I just updated from iOS3 to iOS4 on my iPhone and I hate the multi task bar. After half a day there are ten apps in there that I need to quit manually. at that point it's easier to reboot the phone twice a day.

*sigh* You don't have to quit those apps. They aren't necessarily doing anything.
Sorry about that, but I already anticipate what happened over on the iPhone section when 4.0 came out. Lots of hand wringing over apps in the task. Regardless of them having no background processes whatsoever, the fact that they're there means they must be running in the background.
Now...back on track to the original concern.
I agree with the original poster. Displaying the recent searches is dumb. Not necessary.

I don't think this is a problem at all. It's a little annoying but the logic is that you have no opened page and they show you previous searches to help you along to a page in a sense. Going all the way out to Settings to clear everything can be annoying I'll admit that. The better solution and one I don't seem to see anyone addressing is why can't we select a home page to open to on each launch like apple.com or google.com. That would fix the issue and replicate what most other browsers do by design.
I hate to "re-derail" but I notice my battery dwindle much faster with many apps in the tray "doing nothing" compared to regularly removing them from the tray. They are not supposed to be doing anything but I notice battery dips so I'm inclined to agree with the OG derailer. Hahaha.
Hate to tell you guys, it does it in 4.2.1GM which was released today..
Drop a message to Apple's product feedback asking for the option be added in Setttings/Safari to save search history or not. Who knows, if enough ask they still have time to include it innthe final version.

Well, you could always stop searching for pr0n on your iPad if you don't want your wife to see.
Seriously though, if you want to keep your Internet activity private, drop a dollar on Atomic Browser or something similar. It has a "private mode" as well as many other useful features.
And, as another poster mentioned, clearing the cache and history in settings should do the trick, as well.

I do have to manually close an app about once a week due to errors/non-responsiveness of the app. And sometimes I just close them down for fun, but to hear someone say that they restart their phone twice a day to wipe them out either scares me or makes me sad. Tapping little red minus signs is pretty quick actually.

Rebooting the phone doesn't close this apps though... ?
