I am having problems recording a screencast with quicktime x

I am trying to record a screncast which involves a external hard drive when I try to unmount the external HDD during the screencast I get the following message.

The disk “UNTITLED” couldn’t be ejected because “QuickTime Player” is using it

Surely quicktime records to the internal hard drive not the external one. Does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it?
