What SOHO NAS to buy?

I am looking to buy a sub-$500 SOHO 2-drive NAS with RAID-1 support for use at home. Any recommendations? Reliability and performance are my top two concerns.

I would consider QNAP. They are very fast, have tons of server like features, and a huge following.

Their 2-bay TS-239 Pro would be my choice if I'd shop for a two bay NAS.
