Unlocking old iPhone 3G

So I'm clueless on how to unlock this phone. I'm pretty familiar with how to unlock iPhones on the newer firmwares, but this one is on 2.2.1 and 02.30.03. I don't think there's any simple way to unlock this phone (I've already googled). Anyone know what steps I could take to upgrade to a newer software/modem firmware that's unlockable by ultrasn0w?

I don't really care what software version. I just need it unlocked.
 
That sounds good. If I understand correctly, on a 3G I can upgrade to any firmware without having to worry about SHSH's right?
